Overview

There's a way to know a city that's completely different from traditional tours. It's when you walk with a local guide who truly loves where they live, who knows every story, every street, every corner not as memorized information but as part of their daily life.

The Santa Marta Free Tour is exactly that. Free, but completely genuine. No obligation of fixed price. No inflated corporate structure. Just a guide who decided to share their city with you, because they believe Santa Marta deserves to be understood from inside, not by rushed tourists arriving and leaving.

It begins at Cathedral Plaza. Here stands South America's first cathedral. It's not just any tourist fact: it's symbol of how Santa Marta was the gate through which history arrived to this continent. The guide tells you how life was in that era, what it meant to build a cathedral in a remote colonial city.

Then, San Francisco Plaza. The Franciscan church and convent. More layers of history. Buildings that resisted centuries, that witnessed empire changes, revolutions, independence.

Simón Bolívar Park is city's current heart. Here you see how Santa Marta lives day by day. People, vendors, real life, not just past.

The Tayrona Gold Museum transports you to a world before conquest. You see pieces telling stories of civilizations understanding the world differently than we do now.

Mail Lane is Santa Marta's secret. A picturesque passage evoking colonial commerce, travelers' stories, romance of a smaller, more intimate city.

Novios Park is where you see bohemian, artistic, current Santa Marta.

All in 2 hours. All on foot. All told by someone who truly knows the city.

The free tour model is different because it respects your freedom. If experience is worth it, you contribute. If not, you leave without guilt. It's trust. It's transparency. It's how responsible tourism should work.

Santa Marta is Colombia's oldest city. It deserves to be known as it should. Not as a passing attraction toward Lost City. But as a destination in itself.

Traveler reviews

This was the perfect way to start our time in Santa Marta. The tour was relaxed and easy to follow, but our guide still managed to share a lot of interesting information about the city's history and culture. I especially enjoyed walking through the historic streets and learning about the connection between Santa Marta and the indigenous communities of the region. The stops at the cathedral, Bolívar Park and Parque de los Novios gave us a good overview of the city, and our guide also recommended a few places to eat and visit afterward. It didn't feel like a scripted tour at all. It was a great introduction to Santa Marta and definitely worth doing on our first day.
