The Lost City Trek is challenging, but you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to do it. Most travellers with a reasonable level of fitness complete the trek without major problems. What makes it demanding is the combination of long walking days, heat, humidity and uneven terrain.
The terrain is varied
The trail changes throughout the trek, with uphill sections, descents, flat stretches, river crossings and jungle paths.
The toughest day is the one that takes you to Lost City. You’ll walk around 12,000 steps that day, so it’s when you’ll feel the effort the most. The climb is spread throughout the day, with regular stops to rest, drink water and take in the surroundings.
Good footwear with reliable grip is important, especially after rain when parts of the trail can become muddy and slippery.
The heat and humidity make a difference
The Sierra Nevada is hot and humid during the day, and this can make the trek feel more demanding than the climbs themselves.
Days 1 and 4 tend to have more sections exposed to the sun, while Days 2 and 3 are largely under the jungle canopy. The shade helps, although these are also longer walking days.
Staying hydrated and taking breaks when you need them will make a big difference.
Pack light
One of the best things you can do to make the trek more comfortable is keep your backpack light.
Extra weight becomes noticeable quickly, particularly on steep or muddy sections. Bring what you need for the trail, but avoid carrying things you won’t use.
Check our packing guide for a practical list of what to bring to Ciudad Perdida.
Do I need to train?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours a day.
If you already walk regularly, hike or exercise, you’ll likely be well prepared. If you’re not used to long walks, adding a few longer walks before your trip can help you feel more comfortable on the trail.
There’s no need to rush. Walking at your own pace is the best way to enjoy the experience.
You’ll be accompanied by a local guide
The Lost City Trek must be done with a certified local guide and an authorised agency.
Our guides know the route, the camps and the conditions along the trail. They also bring their own knowledge of the Sierra Nevada and its history, including the Indigenous communities for whom this territory is so important.
Stay with your group and follow your guide’s recommendations throughout the trek.
So, how difficult is the Lost City Trek?
